About Our Community
Winterset is the county seat of Madison County and has a growing population in excess of 4,300. It is located about thirty miles southwest of Des Moines. Winterset has a rich historical emphasis. It is the birthplace of John Wayne, has an extensive historical complex, and is the site of the Madison County Covered Bridge Festival held annually in October. The city has an active recreation program, beautiful city parks, a golf course, a swimming pool, and an active youth center. The proximity of Winterset to Des Moines allows for the advantages of residing near a larger city while retaining the quality of life found in a smaller community. Residents enjoy significant economic development in the community that adds to the quality of life.
The community is very supportive of the schools and the educational program. This support is evidenced by the active booster clubs, a high percentage of parents attending conferences with teachers, large community attendance at activity events, and positive verbal support that is offered. In 1992 the community voted, by a 69% margin, to construct a new 7th-8th grade building and auditorium. In 1996 the community again voted to construct a technology center. Graduating seniors are the beneficiaries of up to $70,000 in local scholarships.
